New Moon movie sets midnight records

CNN reported that the new movie 'New Moon' set midnight screening records. The report talked about the "Twilight" saga and how it broke a historical record for the biggest midnight showing in history.

The total gross for "New Moon" was $26.3 million when it opened in 3,514 theaters across the U.S. at 12:01 a.m. on Friday.

This reporter/report used a lot of numbers to tell the story. First, the reporter talked a lot about the gross total the movie made and how it compared to other numbers of other films that broke records. It also compared the movie to the first one that came out and where this one stood. The numbers that the report used a lot was the money the movie made its first night.

The numbers were a bit overwhelming. I am thankful that they were in numerals because I would have gotten lost without it. I think that the reporter could have used a better strategy to work with the numbers. Rather than cramming them all in the top with the hard news, it could have been a bit more spread out.

Perhaps he could have held some of the info back for a little while. I don't think the reporter crunched all the numbers, but I definitely feel like they were overwhelming a bit. However, I felt that the story was good the way it was. It didn't really make any sense to change it. It was good the way it was in my eyes but next time I would definitely change the way it was told.

The sources of the numbers are told but not completely. The reporter uses blockbuster and other viewing reports but does not necessarily name them, per say. Thus, they are not listed completely. Overall, the report was good. I liked it. I don't think I can say the same for the movie. :)

2 on YouTube assault video arrested

The StarTribune reported that St. Paul police had arrested two young men who were believed to be involved in a series of random attacks in the Twin Cities. The attacks were recorded and posted on Youtube.

A 19-year-old was charged as an adult while a 17-year-old was taken to a juvenile detention center. Both of them were booked on aggravated assault among other charges, according to St. Paul police reports Tuesday.

St. Paul Police Sgt. Paul Schnell said police were searching for more offenders who were caught on camera. He said several victims came forward and filed their reports late Wednesday afternoon.

"From what we have seen in the footage, they were only four people that we can connect with possible criminal activity in the city of St. Paul that were clearly and directly involved in the planning and/or execution of these attacks," Schnell said.

WCCO also reported that at least two people from the video actually came forward. Because the videos contained the identity of the suspects, both names and faces, it was easy for the police to arrest them and try to go after the suspects.

WCCO also reported that the Minneapolis Police Department said they arrested juveniles Wednesday. The juveniles were suspected of an attempted robbery said the report.

The Youtube clip illustrated young Somali men attacking incident civilians, pushing bikers off their bikes, and attacking joggers and the elderly. Other incidents also included little children being pushed by the young men and one person actually fought his attacker before he ran off.

Police believe that there are more crimes that were not depicted in the video and that people who have been attacked randomly by these young men should come forward.

I actually know one kid who was in the video. It was really shocking for me to see what they were doing. It was not funny at all and this was suppose to be funny. I am glad some action was taken to stop future attacks like this.

Furthermore, I feel like WCCO report did much more thorough report than StarTribune because WCCO had more sources and it was concise, clear and got straight to the point.

5-year-old girl found dead

On November 10, Antoinette Davis reported her little girl, Shaniya Davis, was missing from her Fayetteville, North Carolina home. Later that day, a surveillance camera in a hotel 30 miles away showed a man carrying a girl matching Shaniya's description.

Authorities first arrested another man, but charges against him were dropped a day latter when investigators found out that another man was involved in the disappearance of Davis, after a tip from a hotel employee.

Her body was found Monday in an underbrush off a rural North Carolina road after searchers spent almost a week looking for her.

Fatayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine said Mario McNeill is being charged with first-degree murder and first-degree rape of a child. The girl's mother, Antoinette Davis, is charged with trafficking her daughter and child abuse involving prostitution.

Shaniya Davis had been living with her mother at the Sleepy Hollow Mobile Home Park for about three weeks before she had been living with the father, Bradley Lockhart.

Lockhart said initially he did not want to let Shaniya go live with her mother, but allowed it because Antoinette Davis had shown some responsibility in her life.

Members of the community came together for a vigil on Monday night to remember the little girl. Her father, Lockhart, blames himself for his daughters death.

This story was just really touching and after following it for almost a week, I got somewhat emotionally attached and just wanted Shaniya to come home safe to her father. It was really sad how it ended. Very touching story.

UK couple kidnapped by Somali pirates fear for lives

This is an update on a story I was following.

The BBC reported that a couple kidnapped by Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia have been threatened to die if no ransom money will be paid.

The couple, Paul and Rachel Chandler, were kidnapped on October 23 when they were going to Tanzania. The couple's yacht was found in international waters soon after that.

The Somali pirates made a ransom demand for $7m during a phone call to BBC. The victims' family had the chance to talk to them a little after they were captured. The Chandlers reported that they were being treated fine despite the captivity. They said they were given food and water and were not in harm.

However, the BBC got a hold of a video, the footage was aired by Channel 4 News, of the Chandlers speaking at gunpoint earlier this week.

The Chandlers reported that they were under a lot of stress and they thought the pirates were going to loss patience and kill them.

The UK government has a clear position which is that no payment will be made to pirates under these circumstance. They say that this ransom money is too large and have expressed their sympathy to the victims' family.

The UK Foreign Office has reiterated its position from the last statement saying although the couple were "blameless tourists", no ransom money will be made.

CAR

This article , found on Nicar.org's Extra Extra! link talks about a lawsuit that was filed in Seattle about railroads that go through the state of Washington. The reporter got a hold of database that talks about how a lot of these railroads have been linked to fires.

The reporter looked at the state of Washington's firefighting database and also used other studies and investigation reports about these railroads.

I think that the reporter probably used his/her skills on searching more on this story. He probably used his/her skills on researching databases online to get more information about his story.

German convicted of Muslim murder

Al-Jazeera English reported that a man who stabbed an Egyptian woman to death in German has been sentenced to a life in prison on Wednesday. He will spend almost 15 years in prison, longest sentence in German courts.

The killer of Marwa al-Sherbine, a pregnant Egyptian woman to death in front of her husband and her three-year-old son. Alex Wiens, 28, who has anti-Islamic and xenophobic views. It was said that Wiens was sane when he was in courted and stabbed al-Sherbini to death and injuring her husband, who was trying to protect her.

Elwy Ali Okaz, al-Sherbine's husband, was also shot by the police who mistakenly took him for the attacker. The report said that Weins' attack was motivated by for groups of non-Europeans and Muslims living in Germany. There have been a Muslim outcry especially from Egypt for the death sentence to occur.

However, Egyptian authorities have tried to explain to the public that there is no death sentence in European law and that 15 years in prison is the harshest sentence Wiens will get.

The German government has said that justice has been served. "Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, the Egyptian ambassador to Germany, welcomed the verdict, saying: 'Justice has been honoured.'"

The article said, "Germany had the second-largest Muslim population in western Europe after France" which was kind of surprising to me because I just thought with such a huge population of Muslims, there must be an open dialogue of different issues going on. Like having different awareness programs for people to join and such things like that.

Alleged Somali recruiter arrested, linked to Minnesota

The StarTribune reported that a 43-year-old Somali man from Minnesota was allegedly linked to financing the recruitment of more than 20 young Somali men from Minneapolis to fight with a terrorist group in Somalia.

The report stated that the man, identity withheld, is originally from Minneapolis and was arrested earlier this week in the Netherlands. This arrest is the most significant development to a mysterious story surrounding the disappearances of these young man.

Special Agent E.K. Wilson of the Minneapolis FBI office said the man was arrested in connection with the missing young men beginning in 2007. Dutch authorities have said American authorities wanted the man arrested so that he can later be extradited in the United States.

The disappearances of these young men began in 2007 and in 2008, there were more and more youth who were going back home. The man is believed to supply these young man with purchases of weapons and bankrolling.

The story said that Minneapolis has been home to this story for the last two years and that most of the men who left did not tell their family or friends about their plans to return.

There has been a current investigation undergoing whether or not a mosque has been the primarily involved in the disappearance of these young men. However, with a man arrested for allegedly recruiting and supporting the young men, the mosque might just be cleared.

Supreme Court denies D.C. sniper last-minute appeal

CNN reported that the U.S. Supreme Court refused a last-minute appeal to stop John Allen Muhammad, the sniper convicted in a case involving the D.C. area shootings in 2002, from being executed.

Muhammad, a former soldier, was found responded for killing ten people and wounding at least three in the D.C. area during a cold-blooded sniper spree in the fall of 2002. Muhammad is scheduled to be executed Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Virginia Greensville Correctional Center, close to Richmond.

His lawyers wanted to get an appeal to the execution, but the high court rejected this appeal. The Supreme Court justices rejected a final emergency appeal from Muhammad's attorney saying that he deserves more time to develop his appeal. The justices said there is no reason as to why he should not be executed.

A Washington Post report interviewed some of the victim's families. Dean Meyers was one of the victims Muhammad had killed. Some of his family members will be there to witness Muhammad's execution. Bob Meyers and his wife, Lori, will be at Muhammad's execution by lethal injection in Virginia.

Muhammad will be put to death on Tuesday.

Analysis: Obituaries

I looked at an obituary in the StarTribune.  It was by Tim Harrow and the person who died was James Lehman.

Mr. Lehman played for St. John's University football team as their running back. He is the father of Tom Lehman.

The reporter did use some sources. He talked to the coach of St. John's University football team, his son Tom and a lot of public documentations for his football record.

The lead was not a standard lead saying so and so died. Rather it was an anecdotal lead that told Lehman's football career and his past achievements as a football player. It was a really good lead because it kind of drew the reader in and made the reader see what Lehman is known for.

The lead worked very well for me. It definitely made me want to read more about Mr. Lehman.

This obituary definitely differs greatly from a resume. This obit told the story of a legend, so to speak, of football. The reporter told the story of Mr. Lehman very beautifully. It did not dwell on his career or his education but what his life was about.

It gave you a personal sense of who Lehman was and what he did. His story captures you. Unlike a resume where you have professional things you did.

Healthcare bill finally passed

A lot of news sources reported that the healthcare bill has been finally passed. The NYTimes & CNN have been covering it very well.

This is being called one of the major, historic changes to U.S. healthcare since Medicare was introduced. It is finally good to get a decision and have politicians agree on something. Although the bill has went through several drafts, I feel that it is about time that they pass the bill.

This is very interesting. I am looking forward to what comes out of it.

Pawlenty speaks at GOP event

Governor Tim Pawlenty went to Iowa Saturday night to speak to some 500 GOP activists at an annual "Leadership for Iowa" dinner reported the Pioneer Press.

Pawlenty spoke about health care and creating more jobs for America. What is interesting about this article is that Pawlenty uses President Barack Obama's campaign slogan and adds a twist.

The article says that the Minnesota governor asked the crowd, "Are you fire up and ready to fight back?"  This was seen as his first major political speech and he choose to be in Iowa, the home of the nation's first 2012 presidential caucuses.

A lot people are saying that Pawlenty has a secret agenda and that he is a potential candidate for the 2012 presidential candidates. Although he has not voiced it.

Overall, this is very interesting to see what's going to happen and what steps Pawlenty will take in the future.

Islamist group stones adulterer to death

The BBC has reported Al-Shabab, a Islamist group linked to Al-Qaeda, have stoned a man to death for committing adultery. They spared his pregnant girlfriend, however, until she gives birth.

Abas Hussein Abdirahman, 33, was killed in front of 300 people in Merka city, just south of the capital Mogadishu. A form from the group said the woman is to be stoned when she has had her baby. The BBC reported that this incident was the third time this kind of thing happened in the war-torn country.

The group said that Abdirahman has confessed to committing adultery and thus was to be stoned to death under Islamic law.

The current President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has allegedly accused of the group of ruining Islam's image. He has condemned the killings and the Al-Shabab group.

The president said the group has forced women to wear heavy clothing and that they are doing this for economic interests.

Last year, a 13-year-old girl was stoned to death for committing adultery although she said she was raped.

Somali has been without a stable government for more than 18 years. Al-Shabab abides by a strict version of Islamic law and is in control of the southern part of the country.

This was just an interesting story because this group, which the U.S. has said it is a terrorist group, has had a negative impact on the lives of Somali people. It has held control of the southern part of the country for a long period now.

The article just stunned me because I see more and more of these kinds of acts this group is portraying as ok to the rest of the world.

Slideshow Analysis

My Slideshow Analysis is on the New York Times slideshow page. The slideshow story is on the recent Iraq suicide car bombings that killed over 130 and injured more.

Overall, the captions that are used along side the images are very informative. I also think they are effective and they bring justice to the picture. Although pictures speak a million words, it is also helpful to have something to read. Almost all of the pictures I have seen in this slideshow story were very dramatic and intense to look at. But the captions that come with it put the cherry on top for me.

Although I can see what's going on, I know that there is more to the story. So, yes, the captions were very informative. They added to the pictures and added words and descriptions to the images.

The captions do give you a good understanding of the story. I feel like since it is the New York Times, the images are fabulous and their captions go very well with them. I can definitely see what's happening in the image but the captions add on to what I am observing. It gives the images a background and a complete understanding of what I was looking at.

Finaly, I do believe that they use the limited space effectively because they tell you the important information you need to know. The images are already, on their own, providing you with great detailed information to look at. However, with the limited space, the captions get straight to the main point and ideas that the image is trying to convey.

I feel had I looked at another website or some other slideshow story on another news source, it wouldn't have as effective because I see the New York times as so prestigious to only have the best of the best.

Somali pirates capture British couple

CNN reported that Somali pirated captured and kidnapped a British couple aboard their yacht last week.
The Somali pirates are asking for a $7 million ransom and British officials say they won't pay it.

Paul and Rachel Chandler were taken from their yacht in the Indian Ocean on October 23. The two have been moved to another ship that pirates have had for a several months now.

The couple spoke to Rachel Chandler's brother on Friday that CNN videotaped. Chandler's brother read a letter to the pirates asking for the immediate release of his sister.

The New York times reported that some of the pirates might want money while others argue that they should get some pirate colleagues in exchange for the couple.

The pirates have now bought the couple onto shore in the town of Baxdo and many residents believe that they have do so because of the military presence in the ocean.

Pirates have been very active in the war-torn country of Somalia in the past two years. Somalia has been without a stable government since 1991 and since then has been a violent torn country. Piracy has been a huge problem. There have been more than 300 piracy attacks off the coast of Somalia.

Six bodies found were homicide victims

The Associated Press reported that six women whose bodies were found at the home of a convicted rapist were all victims of homicide.
Five of the women have allegedly been strangled, although decomposition made it very difficult to determine how the sixth one died.

A spokesman for the Cuyahoga County coroner said that the bodies could have been there "anywhere from weeks to months to years." Although two of the victims are identified as black, the rest of the women have not been identified yet.
Anthony Sowell, 50, who is a registered sex offender was arrested Saturday. The first bodies were found on Thursday night when police went to Sowell's home to arrest him for a rape assault.

The woman Sowell allegedly attacked survived. Sowell does have a previous criminal history for choking and raping a 21-year-old woman.

Woman attacked on her way to her mother’s home

The Pioneer Press  reported that two men were charged in a St. Paul elevator on October 22.
The report said that the attack occurred in an apartment building at 2150 Wilson Ave. The Ramsey County attorney’s office charged Don Conley, 34, of St. Paul, and Swenson Keeler, 26. The two sexually assaulted the woman when she was on her way to see her mother. She escaped the attack after she kicked one of them and elbowed the other.
The victim reported that she did not know her attackers.
The two men were in a Cadillac near by the building when they saw the 26-year-old woman going into the building. They followed her into the elevator and sexually assaulted her.
Both men’s bail was set at $40,000. Conley and Keeler both seemed to have prior criminal record, although Conley was convicted of more crimes.
