The Pilgrimage to Hajj coverage by Al-Jazeera English

I decided to do my analysis on the special report Al-Jazeera has on the pilgrimage to the Hajj. This is a racially, culturally and religiously diverse group.

Muslims go to the Hajj and pay a visit to Mecca, Saudi Arabia as part of one of the central religious duties as Muslims. This year, close to 2.5 million people have gone to Hajj.

Al-Jazeera English has dedicated a section to this event. Most of the reporters, not all, were Muslim so you see them wearing the traditional Islamic dressings worn during Hajj and it really moves beyond the stereotypes about Muslims.

All the reporting are very good and they are first-hand experiences from the people themselves. I saw this story in which a little girl shares her own experience with the Hajj for the first time. There are blogs from people that are there and journalists that are there.

As a Muslim, I knew most of the things that they were talking about, however, I felt that someone with little knowledge about what exactly Muslims do during this time would find this very helpful.

The testimonies drove home for me. It was the people's stories that I enjoyed the most. The individuality and uniqueness in each story really made them stand out for me. I felt like the reporters did a good job in viewing Islam differently and bringing some positivity to it.

There are a lot of visuals, videos and testimonies to watch. Overall, I think they did a wonderful job.

White House defends Social Secretary

CNN - White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers has done a great job despite the "party crashers" incident, U.S. administration officials say.

Rogers has been identified as a close friend of the Obamas and has been center of a scrutiny the past couple of days. Republicans have claimed she was at fault for an incident in which two uninvited guests got into the White House state dinner held in honor for an Indian Prime Minister.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that Rogers was too distracted by other things to enforce a proper security at the event. Gibbs told reporters that the Obamas and the White House staff are behind her.

Rogers has been the center of the media in recent days because the uninvited guests, Mr. and Mrs. Salahi, might have been danger to the president.

Head-on crash ends pregnancy; mom hurt

Pioneer Press - A pickup truck struck a Minneapolis woman who was pregnant when the vehicle drove the wrong way on a highway ramp Saturday night.

According Minnesota state patrol, the truck hit and slammed into a family's van around 11:45 p.m. at the 49th Avenue exit on Interstate Hwy. 94.

A 29-year-old pregnant woman, Tao Thao, was critically hurt and in critical condition at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale. Thao's other family members including her husband and five other children were in the van with her.

The driver of the truck was identified as Connie Stroud, who had "too much to drink," said state patrol.
Stroud, 42, of Minneapolis was also in critical condition Sunday afternoon. Stroud could be charged with driving while "intoxicated, criminal vehicular operation resulting in homicide and criminal vehicular operation resulting in injuries."

The crash came after the Minnesota state patrol and other police agencies gave a press conference about harsher crackdowns between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Somali suicide bombing kills 3 Cabinet ministers

Hiiraan News reported that Somalia's fragile and dim future faced another setback on Thursday, when a male suicide bomber dressed as a woman, killed 23 and wounded 40 more.

The bombing took place at the Hotel Shamo in Mogadishu ending a graduating ceremony for medical students of the local Banadir University, which was also being attended by a number of governmental authorities.

Witnesses said that the attack seemed to target governmental officials.

Three of the victims were ministers while most of the others were innocent students who were about to graduate. Education Minister Abdullahi Wayel, Health Minister Qamar Aden and Higher Education Minister Ibrahim Hassan Adow died. As students were take their steps of their long road to education, someone decided to blast them all.

"Forty people with shrapnel wounds, including students, journalists, and medical doctors, have been hospitalized today. Six people died inside the hospital," said Dr. Ali Yusuf, director of Median Hospital.

Among the other dead includes two professors and two journalists. Some 50 other students were reported to have serious injuries.

Although aurthorities have reasons to believe that Al-Shabab, an Islamic militant organization close to Al Qaeda, is behind the bloodshed, the extremist group has denied any responsibility.

The spokesman for al-Shabab, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, denies responsibility for the attack, suggesting it was the product of a feud within the UN-backed Transitional Federal Government.

From other reports I've read in VOA and other news sources, this attack has been one of the deadliest to hit Mogadishu for several months.

Somalia has been without a government since the late 1990's when the civil war broke out. It has since been facing some extreme setbacks with terrorist groups and warlords.

New Moon movie sets midnight records

CNN reported that the new movie 'New Moon' set midnight screening records. The report talked about the "Twilight" saga and how it broke a historical record for the biggest midnight showing in history.

The total gross for "New Moon" was $26.3 million when it opened in 3,514 theaters across the U.S. at 12:01 a.m. on Friday.

This reporter/report used a lot of numbers to tell the story. First, the reporter talked a lot about the gross total the movie made and how it compared to other numbers of other films that broke records. It also compared the movie to the first one that came out and where this one stood. The numbers that the report used a lot was the money the movie made its first night.

The numbers were a bit overwhelming. I am thankful that they were in numerals because I would have gotten lost without it. I think that the reporter could have used a better strategy to work with the numbers. Rather than cramming them all in the top with the hard news, it could have been a bit more spread out.

Perhaps he could have held some of the info back for a little while. I don't think the reporter crunched all the numbers, but I definitely feel like they were overwhelming a bit. However, I felt that the story was good the way it was. It didn't really make any sense to change it. It was good the way it was in my eyes but next time I would definitely change the way it was told.

The sources of the numbers are told but not completely. The reporter uses blockbuster and other viewing reports but does not necessarily name them, per say. Thus, they are not listed completely. Overall, the report was good. I liked it. I don't think I can say the same for the movie. :)

2 on YouTube assault video arrested

The StarTribune reported that St. Paul police had arrested two young men who were believed to be involved in a series of random attacks in the Twin Cities. The attacks were recorded and posted on Youtube.

A 19-year-old was charged as an adult while a 17-year-old was taken to a juvenile detention center. Both of them were booked on aggravated assault among other charges, according to St. Paul police reports Tuesday.

St. Paul Police Sgt. Paul Schnell said police were searching for more offenders who were caught on camera. He said several victims came forward and filed their reports late Wednesday afternoon.

"From what we have seen in the footage, they were only four people that we can connect with possible criminal activity in the city of St. Paul that were clearly and directly involved in the planning and/or execution of these attacks," Schnell said.

WCCO also reported that at least two people from the video actually came forward. Because the videos contained the identity of the suspects, both names and faces, it was easy for the police to arrest them and try to go after the suspects.

WCCO also reported that the Minneapolis Police Department said they arrested juveniles Wednesday. The juveniles were suspected of an attempted robbery said the report.

The Youtube clip illustrated young Somali men attacking incident civilians, pushing bikers off their bikes, and attacking joggers and the elderly. Other incidents also included little children being pushed by the young men and one person actually fought his attacker before he ran off.

Police believe that there are more crimes that were not depicted in the video and that people who have been attacked randomly by these young men should come forward.

I actually know one kid who was in the video. It was really shocking for me to see what they were doing. It was not funny at all and this was suppose to be funny. I am glad some action was taken to stop future attacks like this.

Furthermore, I feel like WCCO report did much more thorough report than StarTribune because WCCO had more sources and it was concise, clear and got straight to the point.

5-year-old girl found dead

On November 10, Antoinette Davis reported her little girl, Shaniya Davis, was missing from her Fayetteville, North Carolina home. Later that day, a surveillance camera in a hotel 30 miles away showed a man carrying a girl matching Shaniya's description.

Authorities first arrested another man, but charges against him were dropped a day latter when investigators found out that another man was involved in the disappearance of Davis, after a tip from a hotel employee.

Her body was found Monday in an underbrush off a rural North Carolina road after searchers spent almost a week looking for her.

Fatayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine said Mario McNeill is being charged with first-degree murder and first-degree rape of a child. The girl's mother, Antoinette Davis, is charged with trafficking her daughter and child abuse involving prostitution.

Shaniya Davis had been living with her mother at the Sleepy Hollow Mobile Home Park for about three weeks before she had been living with the father, Bradley Lockhart.

Lockhart said initially he did not want to let Shaniya go live with her mother, but allowed it because Antoinette Davis had shown some responsibility in her life.

Members of the community came together for a vigil on Monday night to remember the little girl. Her father, Lockhart, blames himself for his daughters death.

This story was just really touching and after following it for almost a week, I got somewhat emotionally attached and just wanted Shaniya to come home safe to her father. It was really sad how it ended. Very touching story.

UK couple kidnapped by Somali pirates fear for lives

This is an update on a story I was following.

The BBC reported that a couple kidnapped by Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia have been threatened to die if no ransom money will be paid.

The couple, Paul and Rachel Chandler, were kidnapped on October 23 when they were going to Tanzania. The couple's yacht was found in international waters soon after that.

The Somali pirates made a ransom demand for $7m during a phone call to BBC. The victims' family had the chance to talk to them a little after they were captured. The Chandlers reported that they were being treated fine despite the captivity. They said they were given food and water and were not in harm.

However, the BBC got a hold of a video, the footage was aired by Channel 4 News, of the Chandlers speaking at gunpoint earlier this week.

The Chandlers reported that they were under a lot of stress and they thought the pirates were going to loss patience and kill them.

The UK government has a clear position which is that no payment will be made to pirates under these circumstance. They say that this ransom money is too large and have expressed their sympathy to the victims' family.

The UK Foreign Office has reiterated its position from the last statement saying although the couple were "blameless tourists", no ransom money will be made.

CAR

This article , found on Nicar.org's Extra Extra! link talks about a lawsuit that was filed in Seattle about railroads that go through the state of Washington. The reporter got a hold of database that talks about how a lot of these railroads have been linked to fires.

The reporter looked at the state of Washington's firefighting database and also used other studies and investigation reports about these railroads.

I think that the reporter probably used his/her skills on searching more on this story. He probably used his/her skills on researching databases online to get more information about his story.

German convicted of Muslim murder

Al-Jazeera English reported that a man who stabbed an Egyptian woman to death in German has been sentenced to a life in prison on Wednesday. He will spend almost 15 years in prison, longest sentence in German courts.

The killer of Marwa al-Sherbine, a pregnant Egyptian woman to death in front of her husband and her three-year-old son. Alex Wiens, 28, who has anti-Islamic and xenophobic views. It was said that Wiens was sane when he was in courted and stabbed al-Sherbini to death and injuring her husband, who was trying to protect her.

Elwy Ali Okaz, al-Sherbine's husband, was also shot by the police who mistakenly took him for the attacker. The report said that Weins' attack was motivated by for groups of non-Europeans and Muslims living in Germany. There have been a Muslim outcry especially from Egypt for the death sentence to occur.

However, Egyptian authorities have tried to explain to the public that there is no death sentence in European law and that 15 years in prison is the harshest sentence Wiens will get.

The German government has said that justice has been served. "Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, the Egyptian ambassador to Germany, welcomed the verdict, saying: 'Justice has been honoured.'"

The article said, "Germany had the second-largest Muslim population in western Europe after France" which was kind of surprising to me because I just thought with such a huge population of Muslims, there must be an open dialogue of different issues going on. Like having different awareness programs for people to join and such things like that.

Alleged Somali recruiter arrested, linked to Minnesota

The StarTribune reported that a 43-year-old Somali man from Minnesota was allegedly linked to financing the recruitment of more than 20 young Somali men from Minneapolis to fight with a terrorist group in Somalia.

The report stated that the man, identity withheld, is originally from Minneapolis and was arrested earlier this week in the Netherlands. This arrest is the most significant development to a mysterious story surrounding the disappearances of these young man.

Special Agent E.K. Wilson of the Minneapolis FBI office said the man was arrested in connection with the missing young men beginning in 2007. Dutch authorities have said American authorities wanted the man arrested so that he can later be extradited in the United States.

The disappearances of these young men began in 2007 and in 2008, there were more and more youth who were going back home. The man is believed to supply these young man with purchases of weapons and bankrolling.

The story said that Minneapolis has been home to this story for the last two years and that most of the men who left did not tell their family or friends about their plans to return.

There has been a current investigation undergoing whether or not a mosque has been the primarily involved in the disappearance of these young men. However, with a man arrested for allegedly recruiting and supporting the young men, the mosque might just be cleared.

Supreme Court denies D.C. sniper last-minute appeal

CNN reported that the U.S. Supreme Court refused a last-minute appeal to stop John Allen Muhammad, the sniper convicted in a case involving the D.C. area shootings in 2002, from being executed.

Muhammad, a former soldier, was found responded for killing ten people and wounding at least three in the D.C. area during a cold-blooded sniper spree in the fall of 2002. Muhammad is scheduled to be executed Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Virginia Greensville Correctional Center, close to Richmond.

His lawyers wanted to get an appeal to the execution, but the high court rejected this appeal. The Supreme Court justices rejected a final emergency appeal from Muhammad's attorney saying that he deserves more time to develop his appeal. The justices said there is no reason as to why he should not be executed.

A Washington Post report interviewed some of the victim's families. Dean Meyers was one of the victims Muhammad had killed. Some of his family members will be there to witness Muhammad's execution. Bob Meyers and his wife, Lori, will be at Muhammad's execution by lethal injection in Virginia.

Muhammad will be put to death on Tuesday.

Analysis: Obituaries

I looked at an obituary in the StarTribune.  It was by Tim Harrow and the person who died was James Lehman.

Mr. Lehman played for St. John's University football team as their running back. He is the father of Tom Lehman.

The reporter did use some sources. He talked to the coach of St. John's University football team, his son Tom and a lot of public documentations for his football record.

The lead was not a standard lead saying so and so died. Rather it was an anecdotal lead that told Lehman's football career and his past achievements as a football player. It was a really good lead because it kind of drew the reader in and made the reader see what Lehman is known for.

The lead worked very well for me. It definitely made me want to read more about Mr. Lehman.

This obituary definitely differs greatly from a resume. This obit told the story of a legend, so to speak, of football. The reporter told the story of Mr. Lehman very beautifully. It did not dwell on his career or his education but what his life was about.

It gave you a personal sense of who Lehman was and what he did. His story captures you. Unlike a resume where you have professional things you did.

Healthcare bill finally passed

A lot of news sources reported that the healthcare bill has been finally passed. The NYTimes & CNN have been covering it very well.

This is being called one of the major, historic changes to U.S. healthcare since Medicare was introduced. It is finally good to get a decision and have politicians agree on something. Although the bill has went through several drafts, I feel that it is about time that they pass the bill.

This is very interesting. I am looking forward to what comes out of it.

Pawlenty speaks at GOP event

Governor Tim Pawlenty went to Iowa Saturday night to speak to some 500 GOP activists at an annual "Leadership for Iowa" dinner reported the Pioneer Press.

Pawlenty spoke about health care and creating more jobs for America. What is interesting about this article is that Pawlenty uses President Barack Obama's campaign slogan and adds a twist.

The article says that the Minnesota governor asked the crowd, "Are you fire up and ready to fight back?"  This was seen as his first major political speech and he choose to be in Iowa, the home of the nation's first 2012 presidential caucuses.

A lot people are saying that Pawlenty has a secret agenda and that he is a potential candidate for the 2012 presidential candidates. Although he has not voiced it.

Overall, this is very interesting to see what's going to happen and what steps Pawlenty will take in the future.

Islamist group stones adulterer to death

The BBC has reported Al-Shabab, a Islamist group linked to Al-Qaeda, have stoned a man to death for committing adultery. They spared his pregnant girlfriend, however, until she gives birth.

Abas Hussein Abdirahman, 33, was killed in front of 300 people in Merka city, just south of the capital Mogadishu. A form from the group said the woman is to be stoned when she has had her baby. The BBC reported that this incident was the third time this kind of thing happened in the war-torn country.

The group said that Abdirahman has confessed to committing adultery and thus was to be stoned to death under Islamic law.

The current President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has allegedly accused of the group of ruining Islam's image. He has condemned the killings and the Al-Shabab group.

The president said the group has forced women to wear heavy clothing and that they are doing this for economic interests.

Last year, a 13-year-old girl was stoned to death for committing adultery although she said she was raped.

Somali has been without a stable government for more than 18 years. Al-Shabab abides by a strict version of Islamic law and is in control of the southern part of the country.

This was just an interesting story because this group, which the U.S. has said it is a terrorist group, has had a negative impact on the lives of Somali people. It has held control of the southern part of the country for a long period now.

The article just stunned me because I see more and more of these kinds of acts this group is portraying as ok to the rest of the world.

Slideshow Analysis

My Slideshow Analysis is on the New York Times slideshow page. The slideshow story is on the recent Iraq suicide car bombings that killed over 130 and injured more.

Overall, the captions that are used along side the images are very informative. I also think they are effective and they bring justice to the picture. Although pictures speak a million words, it is also helpful to have something to read. Almost all of the pictures I have seen in this slideshow story were very dramatic and intense to look at. But the captions that come with it put the cherry on top for me.

Although I can see what's going on, I know that there is more to the story. So, yes, the captions were very informative. They added to the pictures and added words and descriptions to the images.

The captions do give you a good understanding of the story. I feel like since it is the New York Times, the images are fabulous and their captions go very well with them. I can definitely see what's happening in the image but the captions add on to what I am observing. It gives the images a background and a complete understanding of what I was looking at.

Finaly, I do believe that they use the limited space effectively because they tell you the important information you need to know. The images are already, on their own, providing you with great detailed information to look at. However, with the limited space, the captions get straight to the main point and ideas that the image is trying to convey.

I feel had I looked at another website or some other slideshow story on another news source, it wouldn't have as effective because I see the New York times as so prestigious to only have the best of the best.

Somali pirates capture British couple

CNN reported that Somali pirated captured and kidnapped a British couple aboard their yacht last week.
The Somali pirates are asking for a $7 million ransom and British officials say they won't pay it.

Paul and Rachel Chandler were taken from their yacht in the Indian Ocean on October 23. The two have been moved to another ship that pirates have had for a several months now.

The couple spoke to Rachel Chandler's brother on Friday that CNN videotaped. Chandler's brother read a letter to the pirates asking for the immediate release of his sister.

The New York times reported that some of the pirates might want money while others argue that they should get some pirate colleagues in exchange for the couple.

The pirates have now bought the couple onto shore in the town of Baxdo and many residents believe that they have do so because of the military presence in the ocean.

Pirates have been very active in the war-torn country of Somalia in the past two years. Somalia has been without a stable government since 1991 and since then has been a violent torn country. Piracy has been a huge problem. There have been more than 300 piracy attacks off the coast of Somalia.

Six bodies found were homicide victims

The Associated Press reported that six women whose bodies were found at the home of a convicted rapist were all victims of homicide.
Five of the women have allegedly been strangled, although decomposition made it very difficult to determine how the sixth one died.

A spokesman for the Cuyahoga County coroner said that the bodies could have been there "anywhere from weeks to months to years." Although two of the victims are identified as black, the rest of the women have not been identified yet.
Anthony Sowell, 50, who is a registered sex offender was arrested Saturday. The first bodies were found on Thursday night when police went to Sowell's home to arrest him for a rape assault.

The woman Sowell allegedly attacked survived. Sowell does have a previous criminal history for choking and raping a 21-year-old woman.

Woman attacked on her way to her mother’s home

The Pioneer Press  reported that two men were charged in a St. Paul elevator on October 22.
The report said that the attack occurred in an apartment building at 2150 Wilson Ave. The Ramsey County attorney’s office charged Don Conley, 34, of St. Paul, and Swenson Keeler, 26. The two sexually assaulted the woman when she was on her way to see her mother. She escaped the attack after she kicked one of them and elbowed the other.
The victim reported that she did not know her attackers.
The two men were in a Cadillac near by the building when they saw the 26-year-old woman going into the building. They followed her into the elevator and sexually assaulted her.
Both men’s bail was set at $40,000. Conley and Keeler both seemed to have prior criminal record, although Conley was convicted of more crimes.

Spike Jonze’s Kanye West Film Is Leaked

The New York Times  talks about a video by Spike Jonze featuring rapper Kanye West. The video which is a short film that is depicting Mr. West's life. It is a song that is in his recent album "808s & Heartbreaks". The video is meant to depict themes in Mr. West's life in times of loss (of his late mother, Donda) and isolation.

The sources that are used in this story include an interview with the director, Mr. Jonze and the actually video itself as it is mentioned and referred to a couple of times within the story itself. The author also uses a marketing mogul to give the reader some sort of background about sales with videos/short films like this being in iTunes for sale.

The angle of this story is to inform the reader/public about this. What it did for me was something I hadn't thought about before. After Mr. West's outburst on MTV' s awards, I thought that that event was somehow staged and it was some sort of publicity stunt for something else. The article proved my suspicions to be somewhat true. This New York Times  reported this short film was posted on Mr. West's Blog just a little after the outburst on MTV .

I don't know if this might have been a publicity stunt for people to buy this short film or something else, but this report sort of connecting that for me. So it was taking the angle of reporting this and sort of connecting the two together for me.

The reporter did a great job in crating something more than a listing because he described a lot about the film, he gave substantial background on exactly what the story behind the story was. He talked to the director and got his point of view. It was sort of a story rather than a listing of what is happening with this video/short film that is about to come out on Tuesday.

Overall, this upcoming video has people already raving over it and anticipating for it to come out.

Somali Pirates seize a cargo ship

Aljazeera English has reported that yet another cargo ship has been seized by Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia Thursday.

A spokeswoman for Nato's anti-piracy mission in London, UK said the Al-Khaliq, a panamanian bulk carrier has been hijacked early Thursday morning off Somalia's coast. The cargo had a crew of 26 on board. The crew had 24 Indians and two Burmese crewmen. The closest ship to the Al Khaliq was some eight hours away when the pirates seized the cargo ship.

Aljazeera English also reported that the rise in piracy in Somalia's coast has risen in just one year. There have been 114 vessels aboard and of them 34 have been hijacked. Just last week, a Chinese cargo ship with 25 crew members was taken and pirates were threatening to kill their Chinese hostages.

Since the piracy has risen in Somali, a total of 661 crew members have been taken hostage. Six of those have been killed while eight are still missing.

Somalia has struggled to build state civility since its creation in 1960 when the territories of the former British protectorate and an Italian colony merged. Plagued by conflict, Somalia has lacked an effective government since 1991. As a result, over 1.5 million Somalis are internally displaced and living in improvised camps, while hundreds of thousands of people have fled the country. Some three million people are now in dire need of food aid.

A Minneapolis hit and run suspect surrenders

The StarTribune reported that a Minneapolis man, who is unidentified, surrendered himself after his mother heard a radio report on WCCO about accidentally killing a pedestrian in South Minneapolis on Thursday.

The WCCO (8:30 AM) radio report which aired early in the morning on Thursday was said to be the main reason why the man surrendered. The police asked the suspect to turn himself or herself in before the situation got worse. His mother was listening to the station and called WCCO to get information on who to contact at the Minneapolis Police Department.

Minneapolis Police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said that the man called him a little after 1:00 p.m. after the report aired on Thursday.

"He sounded like he was scared and somewhat remorseful," Garcia said. "I did tell this kid that he did the right thing for himself and his family by turning himself in before a bad situation got worse.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner did not release the victim's information.

A girl found in New York says she has no memory

CNN reported that it has been about two weeks since a girl was found who has no memory or identity of who she is.

CNN reported that authorities have gotten no help from the public or attain any clues to who exactly this girl is. The girl was found on October 9th, a little past midnight in front of a shelter home for at-risk youth and juveniles.

Doctors say that the young woman can be anywhere from 14 to 17 years of age. She has a 2-to 4-inch scar on her back and had a handwritten birthday message on her arm. CNN also reported that authorities said that the young woman has no recollection of what exactly happened to her before she got to the shelter. She has been writing excerpts from a novel by Robin Hobb called "Fool's Fate".

Authorities are urging for any assistances from the public. However, they did also say that the girl is currently safe and is doing well. Their number one priority is to find her family and identify who she is exactly.

The girl is currently reviewing materials for a high school GED exam and authorities said that she is able to do the math portion of it very well while she has a hard time with her recollection to studying any of the material.

Police are asking anyone with information about this young woman to contact NYPD Missing Persons Squad immediately.

News Release

The news release I looked at went into a lot of specifics and I felt that the reporter just captured a bit of what the NR had to say.

The reporter summarized most of the news release and reported what was happening. The reporter also took a few quotes from there to support what he was saying. However, I felt that the news release said a lot more. It had a lot of information that was useful to the reporter but the reporter just incorporated what he wanted to say.

The news release and the final report looked identical and essentially told the public about what was going on with this company's new product. However, I felt that the report was more of a way to inform the public and the news release was for the media to use.

Islamist group whip women for wearing bras

HIIRAAN, a Somali-based news online site, reported that the Al-Shabbab, an insurgent group linked to Al-Qaida were believed to be whipping women who were found to be wearing bras.

The group, which follows a strict form of Shari'a law (Islamic Law), have cut the hands and foot of people who stole in the past. The group recently banned all forms of entertainment such as movie and music in the parts of Somalia it currently controls.

It has been reported by Hiiraan that Al-Shabbab has whipped women who wore bores because it constitutes deception to the eye. "The women were later told to remove their bras and shake their breasts", reported Hiiraan.

Honestly, when I first saw this report, I couldn't believe it. I thought that this was the worst thing they could have possibly done. This was so inhumane. However, it was interesting to read about this. I tried to find any other news site that reported about this incident, but I wasn't very successful.

Balloon Hoax in Colorado

CNN reported that the "ballon boy" saga is a hoax. Authorities confirmmed that the hoax was a publicity stunt made by the Heene family to get a chance to be on reality TV.

Last Thursday, October 15, the saucer-like balloon was believed to be carrying their six-year-old son, Falcon Heene, when it set loose from the Keene home in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Authorities said the balloon was about 20 feet long and 5 feet high. They said that the balloon went as high as 7,000 feet in the air early Thursday afternoon. During this time, the Sherif's deparment contacted a specialist to determine whether or not the child could be in the balloon.

However, the child was later found at the attic of the Heene house. It raised a lot of suspicion when the Heene gave an interview with CNN. THe Hollywood gossip group, TMZ, also reported that the Heenes wanted to pitch a reality show about their family to some media outlets.

The County Sheriff Jim Alderson announced early Sunday morning that the balloon incident was indeed a hoax.

Boyzone member, Stephen Gately dies at the age of 33

When I first saw this news story, I really did not know who Stephen Gately was or what he does for a living. I first saw this news when a friend of mine changed her status on facebook and I clicked on the link that she provided.

I saw rumor blogs and other news outlets that reported Stephen Gately "supposedly" died. I thought maybe this would be a good news event to follow since it was the first-day of the story. The lead in the first story was sort of a question, a suspicion, but not true kind of lead.

Then, when I went back to see how the event was covering today, everything changed. First of all, there were a lot more blog stories and actual news outlets that covered the death of this singer. Secondly, I noticed that the leads now included his age and what boy band he belong to. The stories basically differed and so did the leads.

The leads were more informative, more in depth and definitely more advanced then the others. The two stories that I compared definitely differed. The first one talked a lot about how this could be a rumor and nothing more. But when I looked at the second one, the second day, it was very different. Of course, the news of his death was actually true now so there was more information.

The news included more about the singer, the people he left behind and more about his singing career. It had more substance in that it basically summarized his greatest achievements and celebrated his life as a singer. Especially one that was openly gay.

I didn't see that there was competition between news organization but I did notice that since he was British singer, a lot of the news I've found were primarily on British sites.

Progression of Information

I couldn't really pick out an article to analyze for this news entry because I feel like all the articles capture some progression of information in them.

All the news sits that I look at, NY Times among others, are very prestigious newspapers that are well equipped with information.

Most of the reporters summarize the important elements of the articles very well. They lead give the reader with the most relevant, newsworthy information first and slowly get down to the not so important information.

Some stories are chronologically well organized while others give you the fine details first while holding off other information that could have made the article more orderly. Most part however, and most of the articles I read are usually well organized and the information is seemingly effective.

By giving the reader ample time to digest all the information, these articles are very effective and well organized.

Student accused of stabbing another student

The New York Times reported investigators found no motive behind a student who stabbed another student in the throat last Thursday in a chemistry lab at UCLA.

Damon D. Thompson remained in jail and was on a $1 million bail Friday, reported the New York Times. Thompson stabbed another student, who remains to be unidentified, during their chemistry lab. Students watched as the 20-year-old woman's blood gushed from her neck. Instructors tried to stop the blood before the victim was taken to the hospital.

Authorities say they do not know if Thompson has obtained a lawyer, but he is scheduled for an arraignment Tuesday.

USA TODAY reported that a professor suspected that Thompson was mentally disturbed. UCLA history professor Stephen Frank said he met Thompson in his Western civilization class last year.

In one email sent to Franck, Thompson accuses him of taunting him and making offensive comments while taking an exam.

"I believe I heard you, Professor Frank, say that I was 'troubled' and 'crazy' among other things, "Thompson wrote. "My outrage at this situation coupled with the pressure of the very weighted examination dulled my concentration and detracted from my performance," reported USA TODAY.

The family of the victim says that she is expected to recover. The school did not comment on how well they could have handled the complaints about Thompson's behavior.

Somali President visits Twin Cities

The Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is met with the nation's largest Somali community in Minneapolis as part of a tour of cities with the heavy populated Somali-Americans in America Sunday. (Star Tribune)

President Ahmed's visit is the first ever for a Somali president to come to Minnesota.

The president has had private meetings with youth, elders and the general community during his stay. He will also addressed a crowd of almost 4,500 Sunday at Northrop Auditorium on the University of Minnesota campus.

The recently elected president pressured the crowd in asking for their help to support the fragile Somali government by sending money to international aid agencies.

President Ahmed is said to be the best hope for the Somali nation and people after nearly two decades of civil war. Many Somalis have high hopes for the president and his newly found government.

President Ahmed also condemned recent terror recruiting in the Twin Cities to go back to Somalia and fight with the terror group, Al-Shabaab. WCCO

After Minneapolis, President Ahmed is off to DePaul University in Chicago and then Columbus, Ohio before going back to Mogadishu.

China's celebrates 60 years

China celebrated it's 60th anniversary Thursday with a showcase of military might in a massive parade in central Beijing.

The parade marked the day when Mao Zedong formed the People's Republic of China in 1949. The parade, which is said to be the biggest ever in China's history, was the main feature of the day long commemoration.

Among the honor guests at the main event were communist leaders of China and other prominent figures. China's president, Hu Jintao, addressed the crowd and gave the keynote speech.

"The 60 years of new China have proved that only socialism can save China," Hu said, dressed in a traditional Mao-style suit. (Aljazeera)

The parade included a display of the military power as well as the advanced weapons that China possesses.  Aljazeera  and BBC both reported that this is significant in that China is conveying a message to the world about their forces.

Security was tight and residents of Beijing were told to not leave their homes. In the days leading up to the parade, activists and human rights groups were jailed or placed under heavy supervision.

Aside from parade celebration, there were other civilian celebrations. The civilian parades included about 100,000 people along with floats and other pieces dedicated to China's space program and Beijing's Olympics which took place last year.

Other Chinese leaders overseas said that the anniversary was an unprecedented grand celebration that illustrated the strength of modern China. (BBC)

Chicago teen beaten to death

A Chicago teen was beaten to death by other youth on September 24, when two rival gangs fought three blocks away from the high school they all attended. (Daily Herald - Chicago)

Derrion Albert, a junior at Fenger High School, was walking home from school when he got caught in the middle of gangs fighting. Albert, 16, was struck in the head with a board by another young man. After hitting the ground, witnesses saw others stomping on Albert's head and kicking him.

Albert's mother, Anjanette Albert, heard the news shortly after the fight happened. The principal phoned her and told her to come immediately. Albert said she wants to know why this happened.

"...they couldn't imagine what they just did," Albert said to those who took away her son's life.

Albert was an honor student at Fenger High School was described by his family as a "great kid" who loved school.

"He was a great kid, a good student," Albert said. "We were getting ready to start a plan for a college. That's all we would stay focused on...(We were) moving to the next stage." (Fox-Chicago)

A video recorded by a student captured the gruesome and violent fighting as well as Albert's death.

Police say they have four suspects in custody thanks to this video and they are likely to be charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Albert. Police also said they are looking for more people who might be connected with the killing captured on that videotape. (CNN)

The killing has had a massive impact on many including the White House. Community leaders, churches and a wide range of prominent figures have shade some light on the event.

This is not the first time Chicago has seen violent acts between youth. Rival gangs have been known to stir up fights around the area.

Analysis: Nestle milk link to Grace Mugabe

This article in short is about the alleged ties between the wife of Zimbabwe's President Mugabe and the Switzerland multinational company, Nestle. Find more of this story here: (BBC)

The sources in this story are very limited, in my opinion. The article is mostly based what Britain's Sunday Telegraph Newspaper wrote about this incident. It also uses a statement from the Nestle Company sent to BBC.

The sources are somewhat scattered throughout the article. At the beginning, the newspaper is used a lot and referred to. Later on in the article does the statement from Nestle show. Eventually, however, the author refers back to the newspaper for more information.

The information is not from people. Thus, it seems to be more credible to me. Because the actual information is based on another article from a newspaper and an actual statement from the Nestle company is being used says a lot.

From the beginning the author sets the reader up on what's going on. So, I think it is effective over all. I just think it would have better to contact the office of the President's wife to get some sort of statement so that their point of view is also included; especially since the story is predominantly about her.

Embryo Mixup: Giving Birth to Another Woman's Child

An Ohio woman who was implanted with the wrong embryo gave birth to a baby boy on Saturday and gave the baby over to its biological parents.

Carolyn Savage, of Slyvania, Ohio, says that a fertility clinic transfered the wrong embryo to her. Instead, that embryo belonged to Paul and Shannon Morell of Detroit miles away.

"The Savages say a fertility clinic outside Ohio transferred the wrong frozen embryo in February. Ten days later, they got a call from a doctor at the clinic saying Savage was pregnant with someone else's child." (Los Angeles Times)

The couple did not know each other prior to this incident. The Morells actually thought that Mrs. Savage would terminate the pregnancy. However, the Savages said that they never considered terminating the pregnancy because it was not their child. Instead they said they knew that they were going to keep it from the beginning.

In a statement after the birth of the baby, the Savages said, "We would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to the Morell family on the birth of their son...we wish Paul, Shannon, their twin girls and their new baby boy the best, as they move forward with their lives together." (CNN)

The Savages have reported that they are thinking about suing the clinic, in a CNN interview Wednesday.

The baby boy was born last Thursday at 5 pounds and 3 ounces at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio.

Libyan President Gaddafi Scolds UN Assembly

The Libyan President, Muammar Qaddafi, spoke in the United Nations General Assembly for the first time in over 40 years last Wednesday. President Qaddafi broke the UN protocl by giving a speech that was 90 minutes long instead of the assigned 15 minute time slot he was given. (New York Times)

President Qaddafi's main point was to ask the General Assembly a seat for an African nation on the Security Council. He had several suggestions for the UN Assembly while looking over what looked like hand written notes as he addressed several of issues. An investigation of the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King were among other things that were demanded by the Libyan leader.

"He also suggested that those who caused “mass murder” in Iraq be tried; defended the right of the Taliban to establish an Islamic emirate; wondered whether swin flu was cooked up in a laboratory as a weapon; and demanded a thorough investigation of the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King" reported the New York Times. He said that the UN should have a reform so that it can be more representative of nations around the world.

President Qaddafi criticized the UN for the misrepresentation of people around the world. He said the Security Council was only comprised of the world's superpowers, America included, and these countries failed to intervene in many preventable wars around the world. (Al-Jazeera English)

Moreover, President Qaddafi was pleased with the leadership of the American people in electing their first black president. He praised President Obama and mounted on the fact that the United States elected a "son of Africa" as their president. He even suggested that President Obama remain as the American president forever.

Hate Attack on Disabled Man

Two Minneapolis men were accused of a hate attack that was allegedly racially motivated. The two men attacked a disabled man and were charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors Friday. (WCCO)

Police said Anthony Peter Kipela and Bryan Charles Westerlund beat up a black teenagers early Wednesday morning, while forcing him to strip  and even threatening him with an ax.

The victim, Derrick Thomas, told police the two men robbed pushed him off his bike, robbed him and beat him while using racial slurs. Police said Thomas, 18, is disabled and has the mentally of an 8 to 10-year-old.

"They were saying stuff like, 'We hate the president; we're gonna kill the president, his wife and his kids,'" Thomas recalled from his front stoop Friday, his left eye puffy and discolored. "They said every black person that comes through our park, we're gonna kick their butt. We don't like black people, period." (StarTribune)

This assault and another one just a few blocks away caused officials to file assault and robbery charges against both Kilpela and Westerlund. Both men are 21-years-old and white. (StarTribune)

The story was covered very well in the StarTribune then WCCO site. Of course, I feel that since the StarTribune is a online publication that it will have more details, but WCCO had just the general information. It didn't even have the victim's name or an image of the suspects.

The StarTribune reported that the Secret Service was also conducting an investigation in the case due to the suspects alleged threat to President Obama.
