Boyzone member, Stephen Gately dies at the age of 33

When I first saw this news story, I really did not know who Stephen Gately was or what he does for a living. I first saw this news when a friend of mine changed her status on facebook and I clicked on the link that she provided.

I saw rumor blogs and other news outlets that reported Stephen Gately "supposedly" died. I thought maybe this would be a good news event to follow since it was the first-day of the story. The lead in the first story was sort of a question, a suspicion, but not true kind of lead.

Then, when I went back to see how the event was covering today, everything changed. First of all, there were a lot more blog stories and actual news outlets that covered the death of this singer. Secondly, I noticed that the leads now included his age and what boy band he belong to. The stories basically differed and so did the leads.

The leads were more informative, more in depth and definitely more advanced then the others. The two stories that I compared definitely differed. The first one talked a lot about how this could be a rumor and nothing more. But when I looked at the second one, the second day, it was very different. Of course, the news of his death was actually true now so there was more information.

The news included more about the singer, the people he left behind and more about his singing career. It had more substance in that it basically summarized his greatest achievements and celebrated his life as a singer. Especially one that was openly gay.

I didn't see that there was competition between news organization but I did notice that since he was British singer, a lot of the news I've found were primarily on British sites.
